| The Season |
PlaysAt La Jolla Playhouse, our goal is to serve as an artistic home where the most exciting theatre artists in the country are given the resources to create the works that drive them, and our 2009/2010 subscription season welcomes some of the best to San Diego. Four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally opens our season with his latest play, Unusual Acts of Devotion. A valentine to the indomitable human (but not always humane) spirit, this honest and compassionate work focuses on five Greenwich Village neighbors, each at a crucial crossroads in their lives. Continuing our commitment to exciting new work, I am proud to offer two plays commissioned by the Playhouse, from two singular talents. Doug Wright, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning play I Am My Own Wife inaugurated our Page To Stage New Play Development Program, returns to the Playhouse with a blistering contemporary adaptation of August Strindberg’s Creditors. A true force of nature, two-time Tony Award-nominee Claudia Shear appears on stage in the world premiere of her play, Restoration, which tracks the funny and moving story of an art restorer hired to prepare Michelangelo’s David for its 500th birthday. Tony Award-winning actor BD Wong comes to La Jolla in Herringbone, a musical in which a young vaudeville wunderkind finds the road to fame and fortune contains an unplanned detour: possession by a demonic spirit. BD’s remarkable performance — as eleven separate characters — is not to be missed. Next, we are thrilled to offer the first regional production of the hilarious, smash-hit Broadway show, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps. This critically-acclaimed, Tony Award-winning farce completely re-invents Hitchcock’s classic spy thriller, and features an incredible ensemble of four actors portraying over 150 characters. Finally, we close our season with Bonnie & Clyde, a world premiere musical — with a thrilling new score that combines rockabilly, blues and gospel music.
